Bay of Plenty Garden and Art Festival

Bloom in the Bay

Bay of Plenty Regional Council – Nicky Oliver-Smith

From the Pond to the Lake – a biosecurity presentation

Your garden is a living, evolving environment. It takes time and energy to design, create and maintain. Knowledge can be learnt through trial and error when it comes to plants and their characteristics, especially when the plant is not native to the country.

Aquatic plants are no exception to this.

This presentation will look at the humble beginnings of DIY backyard ponds and how their popularity has evolved over the years into larger, wild plant natural swimming pools. It will also cover how we are finding and bringing exotic aquatic plants into New Zealand and I will show examples of when these exotic plants have gone rogue from the pond into the natural aquatic environments, and the consequences of this.
